Body of 9-year-old girl Nidhi Acharya found
Padubidri, May 30th, 2018: The body of a 9-year-old girl Nidhi who was washed away near a flooded minor bridge near Kalsanka on Tuesday, was found 100 meters away in a nearby field on Wednesday morning.
Nidhi and NIsha Acharya (14), daughters of Umesh and Asha Acharya, of Padebettu's Pambadebettu, had gone to school on Tuesday morning to attend the reopening function. ue to heavy rain, the SBVP school in Shri Mahalingeshwara temple premis, declared a holiday in the afternoon. After getting down from autorickshaw till Kalsanka, they proceeded on the parked bicyle on the concrete road leading towards their house in Patla. The swirling rain water was overflowing on the road and both were washed away.
Watching the children being washed away, Satish Shetty, a nearbyt resident, jumped into water to rescue them. But due to strong water flow and high water level, he managed to rescue only Nisha. The local youth immediately swung into action and the search continued till late night with the help of fire department. Only the bicycles could be recovered at the night. The search continued in the morning alongwith NDRF team pressed into service by Udupi Deputy Commissioner. The body was finally found at 8.20 am.
After the post mortem at Padubidri Primary Health Centre, the body was handed over to the famiily after registering the police case.
Deputy commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis visited the spot and handed over a cheque for Rs. 4 lakhs to NIdhi's family, as per Chief Minister H.D Kumarasamy's instructions from CM's Natual Disaster Relief Fund. District JD(S) president Yogeesh Shetty and secretary Jayarama Acharya and others were present.
Udupi-Chickmagalur MP Shobha Karandlaje visited the family. Speaking with the media persons, she opined that slow and unscientific work on the highway bridge is responsible for the flodding in thearea. She assured of appropriate action after holding talks with highway contractors Navyug constructions and department officials.
